The DXF (Drawing Exchange Format file) container is a very common file type developed by AutoDesk and used in the AutoCAD suite of design software. The format is ASCII-based, which makes it compatible with a wide range of formats. DWG (AutoCAD Drawing Database File) is the proprietary format for AutoCAD documents, and is compatible with all versions of the AutoCAD software. The easiest way to convert between the two formats is by using a downloadable conversion program.

Step 1

Open a Web browser, such as Apple Safari or Mozilla Firefox.

Step 2

Navigate to a site that allows you to download a DXF to DWG converter. You can find a link to three popular options in Resources.

Step 3

Download the software. If possible, find a trial version of the software to make sure the program is compatible with your computer.

Step 4

Install the software. You may need to accept a user's agreement before the installation will complete.

Step 5

Run the software and locate the 'Upload' or 'Choose File' button. Find the DXF file you wish to convert on your hard drive and press 'Enter' to select it.

Press 'Convert' or 'Start' to begin the conversion. Once it has completed, the DWG file will appear in the conversion software's file folders.
